4 and Fluent: Language Growth at Age Four

At UpWords Speech, we know age four is a big year for communication. Your child is developing more complex language skills, expressing themselves clearly, and engaging in real conversations.
What to Expect:
Most 4-year-olds can speak in full sentences, use thousands of words, and tell simple stories about their day. Their speech is easier for others to understand, even those outside the family.

They’re also mastering big concepts—understanding ideas like time (“later,” “tomorrow”), sequencing (“first,” “next”), and following detailed directions. You’ll notice more back-and-forth conversation and plenty of curious questions.

When to Reach Out:
If your child struggles to be understood, forms short or broken sentences, or avoids speaking, our team at UpWords Speech is here to help. Early support can build strong foundations for lifelong communication.
