Finding Their Voice: Speech & Language Milestones in Middle School

UpWords LOGO2 2018 (1).png

Middle school is a time of big transitions—socially, emotionally, and academically. During these years, speech and language skills continue to grow, helping students navigate more complex conversations, express deeper thoughts, and succeed in the classroom.

What to Expect:
Middle schoolers are expected to communicate clearly, participate in group discussions, follow multi-step instructions, and use language for reasoning, problem-solving, and persuasion. Their vocabulary expands, they understand figurative language (like idioms and sarcasm), and they begin to adapt their communication based on social settings.

When to Reach Out:
If your child struggles to organize their thoughts, explain ideas, understand classroom language, or connect with peers through conversation, a speech-language evaluation could be helpful. These skills are critical for academic achievement and growing confidence during the middle school years.
