From ABCs to Conversations: Elementary Speech Growth

UpWords LOGO2 2018 (1).png

As children move through elementary school, their communication skills grow more advanced—supporting both academic success and social development.

What to Expect:
By the time children enter school, most speak clearly and confidently. Throughout the elementary years, they expand their vocabulary, improve grammar, and develop the ability to tell organized stories, explain ideas, and engage in thoughtful conversations.

In school, kids use language to follow directions, ask questions, understand lessons, and express emotions. Their reading and writing skills also become closely tied to their speech and language development.

When to Reach Out:
If your child struggles with expressing thoughts, following directions, reading aloud, or being understood by others, it may be time to consult a speech-language pathologist. Early intervention can make a lasting impact—both in and out of the classroom.
